Today marks the 105th anniversary of the Salcombe lifeboat disaster. 27 October 1916 started with a rescue and ended in tragedy - one of the worst in RNLI history. The capsizing of the oar-powered William and Emma, left only two survivors from a volunteer crew of 15. It is a story of courage, sacrifice and loss. One of the survivors, Eddie Distin, went on to become the station's coxswain until his retirement in 1951 and his great grandson James is on the crew today. | RNLI
