Though the gates to Yosemite National Park remain open during the government shutdown, employees are reporting an undercurrent of chaos at the park as a skeleton crew of workers contends with unpaid shifts, furloughed colleagues and widespread uncertainty.
The National Park Service said in a statement that it is investigating the climbing accident, adding that "park rangers and emergency personnel responded immediately."
More than half of all National Park Service employees are now furloughed, but Yosemite National Park itself remains partially open.
