One First Nation has sued the province of Alberta, arguing that allowing a possible referendum on separating from Canada is a violation of indigenous rights.

Alberta passed Bill 48, the iGaming Alberta Act, which received royal assent in May 2025. The law created the Alberta iGaming Corporation as a Crown corporation responsible for overseeing the province’s online betting market,

The largely conservative province may hold a referendum on separating from the nation in 2026, according to its premier.

Unpaid municipal taxes by some in the energy industry is a long-standing issue, with Alberta's rural communities owed more than $250 million as of last year.
