Southern Arizona Democrats have crowned Adelita Grijalva the victor of a July 15 U.S. House special primary election, setting the former Pima County supervisor on a glide path to succeed her father in Congress.

PHOENIX (AP) — Adelita Grijalva won the Democratic primary Tuesday for a southern Arizona U.S. House seat long held by her father, the late U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva, one of the most senior and progressive power brokers on Capitol Hill.

Adelita Grijalva beat Democratic influencer Deja Foxx to win the special primary for Arizona’s blue 7th Congressional District to fill out Raul Grijalva's term.

Deja Foxx, a 25-year-old political content creator, was running on a progressive platform to become one of the youngest members of Congress.

The race between Grijalva, who was running to succeed her father, and Foxx, a content creator, highlighted broader intraparty divisions over age, experience and dynastic politics.
