Lots of interesting Maine history. Came up on a rainy day from Boothbay Harbor last fall, and it was well worth the drive. Full review by spome03

Maine’s fossil record dates from about 500 to 360 million years ago (Cambrian thru Devonian periods). Unfortunately, there is a gap in Maine’s fossil record from about 360 million years ago to about 50,000 years ago. No fossil-bearing rocks exist in Maine that date from this very long interval of time. Because the first dinosaurs appeared around 225 years ago in the Triassic Period and they died out about 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous Period, no dinosaur fossils have ever been discovered in Maine. As the Maine State Museum is devoted exclusively to the natural and cultural history of Maine, we have no exhibits containing dinosaur remains from other areas. We do, however, have fossilized mammoth and mastodon remains (teeth, tusk, etc.) from Maine on display in our 12,000 Years in Maine exhibit. These date from the end of the Pleistocene Ice Age about 12,000 to 20,000 years ago.
